Hi, My name is Gareth. Am new to this forum but can see there are a lot of people here who know their stuff. I have recently started building a sports themened content website and have started building links to it by posting it on forums relevant to my sites content matter and also basic stuff like putting it on my eBay and Amazon "About me" pages.

I have heard that link building is an important thing to do to increase your sites page rank (PR) but I am concerned as to whether I am doing it correctly.

    My question is as follows:

Q - Do the major search engines penalise a site if they suddenly see a large increase in number of links pointing to a site?

I remember one SEO agency I worked with sayging this was the case but was wondering what th optimum number per day was without getting spanked by google et al?

I am currently manually adding 10-15 sites a day.

Any thoughts/experience/opinions on this would be appreciated.

    Many thanks,
    Gareth

Funnily enough I was thinking about this whilst cleaning my teeth this morning (that's how much this has taken over my life!)
I was always under the assumption that building links too fast damages your site, and that it should be a natural progression. This is what I've read and heard from an seo agency.
However, a thought occurred to me.
Google's rule is that if a competitor can do something to harm you, then Google should make it harmless. So for example, everyone knows paid links are naughty but competitors could buy them for your site, therefore doing something naughty to your site. So Google can't punish you for paid links, it can only devalue them.
So surely the same should apply to link building? If a competitor knows a new site is being built in his market, why can he not go out and get loads of links and point them all to your site? Therefore Google, surely, should not penalise you for it but it can devalue them.
I think the rule is the same old cliched rule. Get links that are high quality, from relevant sites etc and Google should not punish you.
After all, a new, legit, site that receives a lot of attention or PR or whatever can't be punished if it gets loads of natural links when it launches.
    My 2p.

Google does, but if you are trying to build links using manual methods you should be ok.

It also helps if you vary the link text slightly for each link you request.

    Hi,

Nice site - but isn't Joe due to retire after his next fight against Roy Jones?

If so then maybe starting a general boxing site would be more advantageous in the long term. You could feature the upcoming British fights which could also be monetised by having affiliate links via boxing equipment, dvds, games etc.

You've made a good start on your linkbuilding

Google likes to see a natural patern of link building so if one day you have 20 links and the next 2000 then of course it will raise a flag with Google
What I would suggest is just continue your current pattern which is 10 to 15 a day and you should be okay
Also pay attention to the ips that you are linking from

    :S
I spent a long time a couple weeks ago adding approx 500 backlinks to my site, I then went on holiday for 2 weeks, came back and carried on building some more.

Will this affect my site with Google?

I think that 10 to 15 a day could be a bit excessive, especially for a new site. I would also look at the "quality" of the links you are placing, as links in forum signatures and eBay profiles etc. won't hold much (any) value. Instead I would cut down on the volume of links and go for a lower number but higher quality approach.

Such as a banner on one of the main pages of a site with a high PR?

Not really sure what you mean. However I would never recommend placing banners as a method of gaining backlinks in order to help a site's PR. Text links are a much better option as the anchor text comes into play.

Purely depends on what backlinks you are bringing in. Stay away from link farms and dodgey link exchanges. Just play it honesty, find your link exchanges and work them properly. We've done 500 backlinks a month and never had problems. Make sure your links are from related content and good content.
