Im not 100% sure on this but Im quite sure that Google checks websites and gives each site a PR once every 3 months.

Do they do every website in one go or does each individual site get checked once every 3 months?

As I understand it, google updates PR daily across it's different data centres. The page rank that you see on the google toolbar is different to the real page rank (which is used to determine where you appear on the google pages).

I think the google toolbar pagerank was update recently so will be another 3 or 4 months before that changes.

Well, it has something to do with it certainly.

But it is just one measure of one type of thing that is used in the google model.

If you're looking for numbers to look at to give you an idea of whether you're doing better/worse in search than you were yesterday, these would be more useful than PR:

    1. Number of inbound links (use yahoo, or through google's webmaster central)
    2. Number of natural search visitors per day
    3. Search engine ranking for your top X target keywords

It gives you a chance to get some PR before the next update though?

Everyone says PR is worthless but ask them to swap links and guess what the next thing they do is?

If you want links then having some PR is a guaranteed way to get them

You will find lower PR sites higher in google that those with high PR.

PR is measured primarly on age of domain and inbound links. If a site has a high PR it is well respected in the eyes of google. For example 10 links from 5 sites with PR4+ is much better than 100 links from PR1. If you have an inbound link from a well respected site (high PR) then google will think your site is also respected.

Google has just done quite a thorough PR update, most of my sites have increased which is great as I've spent a lot of time on SEO recently.

What I have found quite surprising, is that my new sites have all been ranked too. One has even been given a PR3. I think the PR is justified given the backlinks I've added but I had thought it'd take 6 months or so.

We have also had a relatively new website increase from PR0 to PR2 in the last re-shuffle. Pleasantly suprised!
