    I see it as:
    • black hat = if the search engines knew what you were doing you'd definitely be banned.
    • white hat = everything else.

it's a grey area though (groan)

If there was a law (maybe ther is a Google law) then:

Legal (white hat) and not not legal (black hat)

    Just my silly view

The definitions will vary depending on who you ask...

But in general, "black" SEO seeks to promote a site beyond it's actual value. "White" SEO is about promoting a site to it's "fair" ranking

White hat = Playing by the book, i.e. fair play.
Grey hat = Pushing the boundaries.
Black hat = Ignoring the book and exploiting weaknesses in the search algorithms.

okey dokey - back links ie getting one way links to your site from other sites.

white hat - emailing/telephoning and asking for a free back link or providing such good content that you get back links naturally.

grey hat - paying for links either directly or paying for a 'review' to be included in a directory (I know Google frowns on paid links and this can result in a penalty - but it's so widespread) or creating 3 way links.

black hat - hacking vulnerable sites/blogs and inserting a link without the owners knowledge.

White Hat SEO refers to the usage of SEO strategies, techniques and tactics that focus on a human audience opposed to search engines and completely follows search engine rules and policies. For example, a Web site that is SEO optimized, yet focuses on relevancy and organic ranking is considered to be optimized using White Hat SEO practices.
Black Hat SEO refers to the use of aggressive SEO strategies, techniques and tactics that focus only on search engines and not a human audience, and usually does not obey search engines rules. For example, keyword stuffing, invisible text and doorway pages.
