Free directories - worth the hassle?

In terms of Google rankings, is it worth submitting your site to the free directories out there?

We're trying to build a list of directories to submit our new sites to as standard. Is it worth it, and does anyone know of any decent ones we could add to this list?

I still prefer submitting my website to free and paid directoires to get quality one-way links for my websites

Yes it still works to boost backlinks.

But it may not always work in the future.

I wouldn't bank on it as you're main source of links. You're probably better off spending your time searching for better quality links. Having said that, I would include some as part of your overall link-building campaign.

If they are free, they probably aren't worth that much... And there is more to SEO than *just* links, although that is the largest part of it

It's worth it. I tested on many websites and it does help in ranking for the keyword. I used free directories to rank for many keywords.

However, it is also important not to rely on directories. Mixing the backlinks with article directories, social bookmarking, dofollow blogs, forums, etc is also important too.
