    well if this is just for seo then ppc goes out the window

    article submission is ok
    directory's are a thing of the past to be honest, submit to no more than 20 quality ones.

    make people want to link to you, offer discounts, competitions or something that people are going to talk about and link to your site

    A combination of all of them.

    I know not everyone values directory submissions (nor do I wish to start an argument for or against them) but for the cost of getting someone to complete them for you (you can pick up submissions to a few thousand directories for a pitance on other boards) they can be worthwhile so long as you're careful (i.e. not too many of the same anchor text etc).

    I have some sites that have purely directory submissions and they perform well, although they are niche sites not targeting majorly competitive terms terms.

    * go niche,
    * write good content
    * provide useful information
    * keep going
    * and some more keep going
    * a bit of directory submission - check it's root and page you will appear on has PR
    * a bit of social media optimisation
    * download spyglass - SEO SpyGlass Software - Instantly Find Out How Your Competitors Got To 'Top Ten' In Google, Yahoo! and MSN Search Engines my rule is never pay people to build links for you if you have the ability to do it for yourself - you'll usually get much better job results. Spy glass makes it so simple to find relevant links with PR that even my mother could do it!
    * realise that linking isn't everything. I outrank some huge sites on competitive sites by focusing on making sure the onpage SEO is right
    * and keep the content going

    From my experience, you can't beat good regular-original content on a site well coded and visually impressive. If you get all these and are discussing a subject that interests visitors, then the rest will follow. Let visitors do the work, if they like your site, they'll bookmark, recommend and link to you.

    Other things worth considering, good quality domains that are not too long, are easy to remember, and target your main keywords/subject. Contentrate on page titles. Plenty of tagging on your images (alt) and links (title), small and accurate urls, no generic numbers i.e. .../pg=15

    Never have I paid for SEO pro's (although I'm sure some get results), link building (or even bothered submitting anywhere) and I manage top SERP's for a number of my main domains, including highly competitive areas with single word ranking.

    Ignore PR (pagerank), it's an ego booster, nothing more. Include META (metatags) on your pages, but know that they are for ease of use by the visitor, they have no baring on SEO positioning etc.

    I wouldn't say "ignore PR", I'd say "don't base the majority of your SEO strategy on it".

    Also the meta description is of use for two reasons:

    1) Theming sites
    2) de-duping content.

    The rest I agree with.

    Yeah, maybe the wrong word, but people get so hung up on page rank that I just wanted a clear action for it. I find it has no benefit to me at all.

    It's just a number IMO, PR generally speaking follows successful SEO, not the other way around. I've never used it as a basis to develop sites into obtaining good SERP's etc.

    I think this is a very fine and best SEO theory (brief) that one should really consider before planning their SEO efforts. Though I never heard or used the "spyglass" tool before but would surely love to give it a try. Do you do the link exchange kinda work yourself or get it done from some third party company ??

    Good work mate !

    I think general directory submission are completely worthless, except Yahoo directory maybe. Submitting unique articles to article sites like ezinearticles is a good idea. Social media is good too for getting the word out.

    PR still has some value, but it's buried benath at least 2 layers of other non-public calculations now, which makes *just* PR a poor predictor of SEO success. When talking to non-specialists, I normally say "ignore PR" too, rather than get into a discussion of why LR and TR are different. Note that Matt Cutts has publically conceded that it's not terribly important any more too

    >> realise that linking isn't everything. I outrank some huge sites on competitive sites by focusing on making sure the onpage SEO is right

    Hmmm, a tricky one, this. I agree, but a note of warning : onpage SEO can be considered an attenuating factor of your links. So you can do well with poor onpage SEO, and lots of links, but the reverse isn't always true

    >> I think general directory submission are completely worthless, except Yahoo directory maybe.

    Not at all, but there aren't that many directories still worth it. The key is generally the strength of the editorial control for a given directory. The harder it is to get in, the more worthwhile it is
