Do you believe that Google is no longer acting on paid link reports?

I think they pick and choose

I see it every day and when i can i report them.
Its when theres a clear pattern like there is there that they should be picking up better

    Nice pickup here James.

Do you have any suggestions on good link buying practices?

    Spread 'em out, Fred.

Don't buy them all at once, with the same anchor text from the same sort of site. Make it look natural. As with most Elgoog endorsed SEO tactics really!

How do you know they haven't.
Recognising a paid link doesn't make it disappear?

Looking at Tamar's site, OMFG my eyes! Talk about a usability nightmare, and their slogan says Natural is Best!

There aren't any. Buy links and there is always the possibility of you getting banned somewhere down the line. Why risk it?

Because the rewards are huge for the short time your in positions 1,2,3 for terms such as Car Insurance, Mortgage, Credit Card. Look at GoCompare case studies...they got penalised but made a fortune when they were top three for those sorts of terms.

To scale it down to some more common affiliate site examples, I reckon if you ask a certain voucher code site owner if he thinks buying links is a good idea, he'd definitely say yes. If his site got penalised now, he'd still survive....link buying helped him build the brand (by appearing for every voucher code / discount code related search term possible) and now his site is well known enough anyway.

Maybe it's better to ask, why NOT risk it?

I agree with you though Kieron, in the sense that its very important to be aware of the pitfalls.

Yes but I happen to know for a fact that they are spending a lot of time and money now trying to get out of that penalty. And I mean serious, serious money. I'm sure if you asked them now if it was worth it they would say no.

I strongly disagree. If the site you mention above got penalised and wiped out by Google it would lose maybe 80% of its revenue? Maybe more. Sure it has a brand and some amount of customer recognition but I bet it still gets the lions share of its visitors from Google.

Honestly if you want to build a brand or a site that's going to stand the test of time then its utter madness to buy links.

Hmm, maybe they would say its not worth it. But what about the others who are still there and have not been penalised and continue to spend £xx,xxx per month on links...they must be seeing a good return. These people know the risks yet push the link buying to the max...the benefits must be there or they wouldn't do it.

Yeah I think you're right. I do feel though that he's made his millions already and if the site got penalised today, he'd have the funds to embark on a new venture without worrying too much....he couldn't have got to that point without buying links. Yes, sites that don't buy links are safer bets for the long term, but equally, they are less likely to making as much money right now.

100% Agree! But then some people don't like playing it safe nor have the patience for it do they.

I'm sure they are seeing a great return. Until the day they get banned and traffic drops to zero.

So getting a link for free on a page that says "Buy a link on this page" is a bad idea?

How so? Getting a penalty lifted shouldn't be expensive. Fixing the damage could cost a bit afterwards, but still... What the hell did they do?

    >> Honestly if you want to build a brand or a site that's going to stand the test of time then its utter madness to buy links.

As with all SEO, you have to consider risk / reward. Bigger sites can easily get away with buying a few links with few risks, *if* it's done by someone who knows what they are doing. And theres "buying links" and "buying links", if you know what I mean

    LOL, yes. Yes it is

What are they spending the money on? Surely it's not more paid links
