In general, I would say this is normal and your site should re-appear in time.

So finished the new site and ftp'd onto the server, tested it all out - OK
Then (following a smingle post), put an advert onto gumtree with a link to the new site - low and behold, the new site got indexed in 2-3 hours - excellent.
This was Saturday, spent the rest of saturday and sunday keeping an eye on the stats and checking placement on google for certain keywords.
Now this morning, logged into the stats - and nothing, nothing all day. So wen't to google and typed in a couple of keyword searches that we were ranking well for and the new site was no longer there. I have checked google for signs of my new site, using a couple of different methods and it has DISAPPEARED :scared
Why has this happened and will/when will it come back ?
Has this ever happened to anyone else ?

Same happened to me.
Posted a link on gumtree etc as per the same forum post on Friday.
Site was listed over the weekend and then today....Nothing - Gone!
I think you'll find this is quite normal for a new site - I've had the same for a few new sites over the past week with them appearing, vanishing, appearing again but they are now starting to settle down.
As others have noted, just getting links is no longer an adequate route to instant ranking - you need to think in terms of d(links)/dt (and if you don't understand that, you probably need to go and relearn about calculus)
dlinks/dtime = get links over a gradual time
>> dlinks/dtime = get links over a gradual time
Mostly. Actually going and rereading the theoretical basis of differentiation / integration pays off

Brendon, would you care to elaborate on your post or not
I only posted on link, got indexed, disappeared - have now reappeared but only for one page and that can only be found when you do a google search on the actual www.domain, it no longer appears for any of the keywords that it ranked for.
I have not bombarded the new site with new links, only one.
Alot of other people have had the same experience as me, will keep an eye on it and see what happens over time.
Brendon, over to you.
think I'll give this one a miss - never did calculus in the first place - too busy in the local bowling alley during that lessonActually going and rereading the theoretical basis of differentiation / integration pays offhmy

1) There is no such thing as a sandbox
2)>> I have not bombarded the new site with new links, only one.
So, the first derivative of your links / time graph is lumpy, and doesn't meet the absolute thresholds anywway. Once the "new site boost" has worn off, I would therefore expect to see a drop in performance, pretty much as you describe. More links in a considered way is the answer
My maths is weak now....scary and I did a degree in Maths including Relativity...and can't remember anything
