I've read a lot about using squidoo or hubpages to promote a site.

Is the idea to write a general page about the topic of the site you want to promote with some subtle links in the text.

Or is the idea to create a mini site - branded to look like your main site - with full-on affiliate links etc.

Don't want to be accused of spamming or manipulating the search engines. Presumably you can also apply the same techniques to free blogs - wordpress.com or blogger for example?

    Any help appreciated.

Yep you got it, basically the idea is you can only have your webpage in one place ( well maybe 3 etc..) in Google's listings.

By adding Hubpages / Squidoo into the mix you can control another sapce too, so now you can own place 1,2,3 and 4. Therefore getting more exposure and covering more bases.

However the Hubpages / Squidoo bubble has almost burst, it was amazing over a year ago - thinks were ranking for number 1 almost instantly! Now its rare to find top 10 place for any Squidoo / Hub.

    Personally I much prefer Pagerank10.co.uk
(message Leeky on here if you have questions - he owns it) its much better for rankings.

With regards to spam, never do things just for SEO / Spiders do thing for visitors and customers - add value not junk. Then you will be ok

If in doubt make sure your registered with Google webmaster and keep an eye on your messages / stats etc.

I was also impressed with Squidoo lens promotion but as mentioned although still effective, its nowhere near as good as it was 6-12 months ago. Although I still recomend having your lens anyway.

Thanks for the tip about FactLockeR, I just signed up there myself.

    Thanks

Squidoo lens, although not as effective in getting the top search engines ranking as before, are still a great way to create a landing page. It's especially useful for the person who has little or no idea how he/she can create his own website. Yes he can create blogs and such easily like squidoo but the rich array of modules within squidoo makes everything so much easier and interesting. Things i particularly love about squidoo:

    - you don't have to worry about metatags and how to optimize it, squidoo will do it for u.
    - easy to add useful modules to spice up your lens.
    - great community!

I would use squidoo lens as my main site and then create blogs and hubpage to link to it. I do find hubpages ranking faster and higher than blogs but that could be just me.
