Google actually devalued the 'juice' that a forum backlink can give well over a year ago - hence backlinks from forums didn't and don't carry as much SEO weight. Whether on not they have reduced the weight of forum links further, i've heard nothing to suggest it and nothing relational recently on Matt Cutts blog.

At the end of the day i wouldn't worry too much about it, you should be using various SEO methods to build links, not just forum - also i wouldn't stop posting to forums because of this (even if it is true) as niche forums can bring you a serious amount of well targetted traffic.

Yes google has been devaluing these types of links for a while/
Its the same with article sites, link directorys and places like squidoo which google loved at first.

Theres is some talk that Google may pass link juice on no follow links in certain cases.
For example if a page on Wikipedia has had a resource link on it for years then it tells google that this link is trusted, theres no real evidence to back this up as yet but i feel its certanly something that would make sense.

Editorial links are the best, ie Links that are in the content body and relevant to the page they point to.

I've been hearing about Google algorithm changes recently so I'm not surprised at all. Even one SEO expert has openly said he never practiced all the usual SEO stuff like anchor text, link exchanges,Meta keywords, description, keyword density yet he has search engine traffic that most of us can only dream of. Perhaps the time has come to think out of the box when it comes to SEO. We will know for sure as we go along.

Theres a high number of spam posts being produced at the moment...albeit fairly subtle, but its still spam.

I would count three out of the previous four posts in this thread as being spammy...mods?

    Linktank excepted.

Isn't there a way to remove the signature links for anyone who has been a member for less than X amount of time?

    Cheers

Ironic.... on a post about links placed on forum posts... there are links on the replies.... Some forums wont allow links for posters with less than 50 posts..... But I guess this forum is used by the affiliate community in part for promotional purposes, especially merchants. it's a tough one...

I wouldn't say that the posts above were overtly spam.... they are contributing to the thread in a constructive way.

That's a good decision. It's not wise to get links only from a specific resource especially since Google is known to make algorithm changes as and when it deems fit.

Well, google is always changing the way that they analyze backlinks because makreters are always finding new ways to exploit the system. Right now Google has shifted away from low quality links (forums/articles/etc.) and moved towards in content links such as paid reviews from blogs.
