    Hi,

I'm looking for some tips on where I can go with SEO after a few weeks work and crucially, whether my progression so far indicates I should bring in some professional SEO help or if I should pursue my efforts alone?

I won't post the link to my site here incase there's worries of spam, so if anyone could lend me 5 minutes of their time and let me send them my website url in a PM it would be immensely appreciated

    Cheers,
    Danny

Post your email address Danny - adding a url from this site will only do good (and might even generate you some visitors and sales).

Its only email addresses you don't want to publish publically!!!

ok well if your looking at getting traffic from the serps you need more content on the homepage really mate, also looks a little messed up in FF

Also your link profile needs to be more varied.
Are you looking at bringing in traffic to the homepage for signups or more longtail to the blog?

Why not get your blog feed on the homepage, keeps it fresh and keeps google interested.

I've been considering featuring the blog feed on the homepage (especially because of it's content), but wouldn't Google see that as duplicate content?? I'm primarily looking to aim visitors to the homepage for signups.

How do you mean by a more varied link profile? More quality backlinks? Or more variation with internal links?

Not, if you feed just headlines and unique summary for each link.

More varied link profile means more domains (not just more links from the same domains!) linking to you.

Hmm not really what i term a varied link profile.

I look at where the links come from in terms of domains but more importantly link type
In content on a blog, article site etc...
    Blogroll or links page
    blog comments
    link directories
    Image links, ie banners
    Social links, digg etc...

Variety of link types on itself has no significance for ranking. What does have significance, however, is the number of indepdendent (i.e. belonging to different owners!) different domains and their Trust and Authority. See recent white board friday video by Rand Fishkin at seomoz blog (just type "Trust and Authority" in Google).

To put the long story short - you may have 10 links from dofollow *.edu or *.gov sites, and you will beat your competitors who have thousands of backlinks from directories, article repositories, social bookmarking site, blogs etc, etc, etc.

Aim at quality, not at quantity. More different domains, not necessarily different types of websites.

Rubbish, if you have all your links coming from link directories or just blog comments then Google can see that, you need a varied link profile

    Again rubbish im sorry.
The TLD makes no difference when it comes to link value. matt, rand and many others respected guys have all confirmed this.
True that they usually are more trusted buts thats because they link to and get links from other trusted sources.

    Nobody argues with that.

Nobody said TLD does. TLD on itself doesn't, trust does. However, some kind of TLDs (e.g. edu, .gov, .mil) are usually high-trust ones, and this is exactly what I meant.

I'll stay with my message - variety of link sources is good only if supported by qaulity of sites. Just a varierty on itself means nothing.

One view to consider is that many search engines currently base your ranking relevancy primarily on certain linkage patterns. Who links and how they link to you are what determines how high in the SERPs will rank for your competitive search queries.

I am not an SEO expert by any means, but I did learn quite a bit from my friend about SEO. One of the biggest things is keyword research. Target your keywords and learn some HTML so that you can understand how the search engines view your site and what they see first.
