Doesn't really help much in my experience - I get better click through rates/conversion rates on static, handwritten ads to be honest. It's good for driving volume of low-quality traffic though (or if you're feeling too lazy to just write out a few...).
Also google isn't too pleased about the use of keyword insertions as they keep sending emails asking to change it: "Our goal is to help you achieve greater success with your Google AdWords advertising. I believe these changes will improve the performance of your ads and increase your Return on Investment (ROI). Please note that you are not required to make these suggested edits."
They're probably right about the ROI I think.
