    Hi
    I have been approached by a magazine offering a 1/4 page add in a magazine with a circulation of 20 000-25 000 for £500.
This seems a lot for so little exposure.

The magazine is very relevant to my site niche (which specifically promote products that will generate revenue of 70p - £4 DVDs to other memoribilia)

So i will need about up to 720 sales to break even.

I was thinking about posting an ad in the Christmas Issue

Shall I follow my instinct and ditch the idea

Any one have experience with magazine advertising.

I realise that the website layout / navability content has to be good, i believe that the site will be very good by end of November

    Cheers

    I wouldn't say that's too much....the mag is targeted.

You'll pay more cost per person advertising in smaller publications than advertising in The Sun.

One of my partners clients advertises his website in a pharmacy publication and pays £800 per week. Very low circulation but highly targeted.

In The Sun a lot of the exposure would be wasted.

If there are any other mags that specialise in the same field, find out ehat their rates are and compare.

All in all £500 doesn't seem to bad.......but if you have to recoup this on a 5% affiliate commision it may work out expensive.

    Check out their competition,

    Take Care

IMHO I would give it a miss.

You've already mentioned that you will need 720 sales to break even so you need between 2.88% and 3.6% of all readers to make a purchase - sounds far fetched to me.

However I'm no expert in offline marketing - if you take it up, I hope it works out for you!

I should be able to beat the price down (a bit of negotiation), but with affiliate links being source of income I am still wary.

I will see what competition there is.

I may just end up negotiating for a free plug.

You need to check where the ad would appear in the mag as well.

I was offered some advertising in a specialist mag (ooh err) a while ago, the rates were a bit higher than what you've been quoted, but the mag had a higher circulation. When I asked where abouts in the mag the ad would appear they were a bit evasive, so I went to the local WH Smiths and took a look at the magazine and all of the ads were in a classifieds section at the back of the magazine. Don't know about you but I never bother looking at those unless I'm looking for something in particular - so that could really cut your exposure.
