    Hi,

I'm doing a not-for-profit forum at the mo, when it becomes the leading forum that may change, as every person dreams it will one day (and is oft-dissapointed.

Anyways, i fancy going for vBulletin instead of phpBB. A major local forum got done in and has never been put back up after Turkish hackers got into it.

Is phpBB really that bad a forum system and so unsafe every single update has to be installed to stop cheeky swines ruining a busy and happy forum?

The reason i ask is i can install phpBB but vBulletin i'm planning on paying for a one year license and paying them about £77 nicker to install it as it's slightly above my knowledge. Probably could do it but am too lazy to learn new things.

Also i read somewhere that Google are deleting phpBB pages on their search or something because of the worms. Is vBulletin infallible when it comes to hackers? as i'm planning to pay for installation once and that's it.

    Cheers.

    Hi,

I always prefer paid software (vBulletin or IPB) but if your forum is "not-for-profit" you can try SMF - much better than phpBB.

I switched from PHPBB to vBulletin around 6 months ago, due to security problems. vBulletin is much better from a functional point of view as well as more secure, I'm thinking of buying another copy for a new site.

You can't just install vBulletin and forget about it though, there are regular updates. A new update was released today, which fixes some vulnerabilities.
Often the security problems are caused by other programs (such as PHP or IE), so all they can do is react as soon as something is discovered.
A program like this will never likely to be 100% secure, but I think vBulletin gets the patches out quicker than PHPBB.

I'd echo pricethat. Been using VB for many years and have tried loads of others in the meantime. You just can't top VB and the community and developers surrounding it.

p.s intstalling and updates are easy peasy and have been made virtually fool proof. If you're really struggling then ask somebody over at scriptlance.com, they should do it for about $15 as it only takes 10 mins to install a fresh copy.

I was going to use PHPbb for my new project but ive been looking into things over the past week and decided im edging now towards VB instead. Seems a better bit of kit altogether.

Cheers for the replies. You shamed me into doing it meself and actually it is a piece of proverbial p*** to do. Saved me a fortune, cheers.

Problem is getting people to sign up now.

Don't suppose anyone has any fledglings forums where we can register and swap a few posts to help get them off the ground?
