    Hi,

Does anyone have the answers? Is it relating to back links, content, SEO and keyword placement, links, or a combination of all of them???

If anyone has any thoughts it would be appreciated.

    Cheers,

    Rich

All of these play a part.

Some people say backlinks make a big difference, but in my own experience its not a major one. I`ve got many of my own sites and pages at number 1 with 1 backlink, and thats it. Saying that though, you shouldn't just dismiss them as they can have a bearing, and will also increase your non google traffic. It also depends on the type of site you run.

Having your keyword in the page url is a good thing, as it tells google that the page is likely to be very relevant to that keyword.

Keywords play a big part, and although you can get penalised for having too many, the limit seems to have increased lately. This is a very difficult area though, because no one knows how many "too many" is, theres no exact figure. Adding a few and waiting for a while to see what happens can be a good idea.

Having a good title and meta description for the page does a fair bit of good, and also include a keywords tag. Some people say not to bother, but it makes you focus on your keywords for the page and have a think about them, which is a good thing, and some search engines do still use them. Its important to make your title, description and keywords different for each page, don't just use the same for all your pages (although this tends to happen more with the keywords tag).

A H1 tag at the top of your page, featuring your keyword and relevant description can help.

Remember though, to write for humans, and not specifically for search engines. It tends to be the case that if you have good readable content, the search engines will like it too (and this is the way it should be). The only exception is to use your keyword a number of times. When humans write they have a habit of not repeating the same words, and using different words to describe the same thing. This does make it more readable, but in this case use the same keyword for the description of what ever it is each time.

SEO is a very difficult subject, as a lot of it comes down to the particular site, and how its coded, theres no one solution that fits all. If you give an example of one page that isn't where you want, and the keyword you want it to move up then you could get more specific advice.

Just had a quick scan through your site, and one thing I would do is to move all the Javascript out of your page and into a separate file, and then include that file on the page. This cuts down the amount of text on the page, so that your content makes up a bigger percentage of the page in terms of text. It also means that it will be cached by browsers, and won't have to be downloaded each time, which will speed up page loading times. It's a very simple tweak, and well worth doing.

Add in an H1 (heading) tag at the top of the body HTML, with the product name (if thats what you want to optimize on). This confirms to google what the page is about. You may not actually want it to display in that location, but you can use CSS to make it appear somewhere else on the page.

Well it depends on where you start from.

If you've got a big brand then employ an expert.

    1) Otherwise make sure your <title> tags are relevant to what each page is about.

    2) Make sure that Google can easily crawl all of your site. Register with www.google.com/webmasters/tools

    3) Make sure you're present in the relevant directories - check out SEOmoz.org for their link building guide

    4) Longer term - have great content / offers so that people want to link to you naturally

    5) Have a blog where you talk about your products and the industry, be vocal, add social bookmarking widgets, cause a stir

    6) Hire a PR agency like Pazang to get you coverage online/offline

    I hope that helps,

    Lee

    Hi Rich,

A couple of things if you haven't already done them.

    1) Create an account at Google Webmaster Tools:

    Welcome to Webmaster Tools

It shows you if there are any problems with your site, gives an indication of how fast its crawling your site, and also shows loads of other useful information such as top keywords etc.

    2) Create a Google Sitemap

This will tell Google all the pages on your site, and so can help google crawl your pages quicker in some cases. You can upload the sitemap and get instructions through the webmaster tools section above.

You may already have done both of these, but thought I`d point them out in case you hadn't.

Clean up you HTML code. There are so many 'little' things that you are omitting and so many 'big' things that you are getting so wrong.

You have so much room on your pages to use the HTML markup correctly to promote your products, and you are not using any markup for promotion.

The easiest way to rank on any search engine is to use the first 1024 indexible characters to promote what you want to promote. Remove all the fluff and noise words from this area of very valuable real estate. Then, on the rest of the page, the markup has to confirm the relevance that you are promoting.

Read the webmaster guidelines on the Google pages - how to code a web page for search engines is all explained there.

... because if you start off by saying that all the pages are the same, they will be treated as being all the same - until Google removed the supplemental results, this was one sure way of being dropped into the supplementals. In your site map, if every page has the same title, who knows where to go for the information they are looking for?

Just plain common sense to have titles etc that relate to content.

Agreed. Google seem to be making a thing about this at the moment. Check your webmaster account under Diagnostics/Content Analysis.

Yes, basically as the others have said, to Google it looks like duplicate content. Even if the page content is different, it still looks like the block of pages are all pretty similar and so it should only choose a couple of pages to rank as important.

I was guilty of this myself when I started, copying the same keywords and meta description for pretty much every page. However i was dissapointed with my SERPS, and tweaked a number of things. When I changed the above 3 factors to be unique to each page, I got a big improvement.

Because spammers used to be lazy and make them all the same - in fact most product feed sites largely have the same content in the three areas.

When I blog I rewrite the titles of the "label" or "tag" pages by hand after a day of working on the site. It only takes five mins to do it.
