I think the thing to point out when it comes to using Dofollow forums for building backlinks is
1. The effect on SERPS is really relatively small and 2. Always Read the ToS before you join up.
I'm a regular at Sitepoint.com, makemoneykingdom.com, dnforum.com, moneymakergroup.com and I know that signature links only become "dofollow" after 100 posts and they are really, really hot on what they call "fluff" posting. Also, I dont feel you can rely entirely on links from forums as your SEO strategy.
I dont feel Google trusts them a lot.
People sometimes think Google is stupid.
This is a mistake, It's very smart. Also Google can be your friend.
Just as you would not mistreat a friend, dont mistreat Google.

Have a well rounded SEO strategy, quality content, and wait your turn.
Good web site rankings will certainly follow.

Like you said would help towards a well rounded campaign. A lttle bit here - little bit there and i wouldn't think it would do any harm would it. Looking at some top ranking sites backlinks you do sometimes wonder how big G works!

nicxe list. Remember that if you have automated the process, even a 'nofollow' link is valuable - you'll get some direct traffic from it, and nofollow is primarily a google thang.

And even they aren't 100% rigorous in their implementation, apparently.
