i came across this link exchange website Link Market - Free Link Exchange, Link Swap and Link Trade Directory.

i was wondering if anyone has heard or used it and if they can recommend a website or something similiar on link building/exchange or just on getting inbound links

Would be interested to hear why you say the linkbacks were not worth much. What were you looking / hoping for and how did it not come up to your expectation?

If we're talking about reciprocal based links through LinkMarket (or in fact through any similar link exchange program) backlinks generated will not carry much 'weight' and will have little or no effect on your SERPs (especially if we're talking about improving ranking in Google).

Search engine algorithms have developed so much that they can easily spot the ‘if I scratch your back and you scratch mine’ method of developing links – links that are not built due to quality, but are built just because someone wants to increase their backlink count!

Its just the natural progression of the search engines with Google (as usual) leading the way. There was a time when meta keyword tags were important however complete over use and a change in search engine algorithms now means that meta keyword data is pointless and does nothing to aid the ranking of your site!!!

I just found that my links were being put on pages that were infrequesntly indexed and ranked very low even though the link partners homepage may have a PR of 5 say their link page often has no PR. I am still persevering with it but still not overly convinced.

Link swaps do work assuming your links are not on crap pages...it has little to do with them being recips, but more to do with the pages that recips are placed on in many cases are just junk pages.
