Camberwells email ...

I would like to remind our affiliates that we do not allow the promotion of our site by "Voucher Code" websites.

Any commissions generated by such sites will be cancelled.

We do very well with incentive sites and welcome their traffic.

Dear Affiliates,

Ultimate Finish is concerned that sales generated by Voucher Code sites are producing cannibalistic sales, especially where organic listed URL's include our registered brand name. It is our considered opinion that these sales would under normal circumstances have come to Ultimate Finish direct.

To this end we would like to thank all the Voucher Code sites for their efforts to date but regretfully will be giving 72 hours notice from the date of this email that their approval is to be withdrawn.

Please note that all other affiliates will be unaffected.

Kind regards,

Ultimate Finish
Guess I'll add them to the list then

UFD. How are you supposed to promote Ultimate Finish Direct if you can't use Ultimate Finish Direct in a url? Answers on a postcard please.

"It is our considered opinion that these sales would under normal circumstances have come to Ultimate Finish direct"

let the merchant see if they can actually retain those sales once the SERPs have been cleaned up.

Yeah, I was thinking of getting some polish for my car the other day and I thought of looking on myvouchercodes for some advice?

Unfortunately, I didn't get the info I was looking for - although I did manage to pick up about 6 cookies and probably earned you a fiver at some point later the same day!

You really think I did that? I already knew how to misspell Ultimate Finish.

Anyway, I think it will encourage genuine affiliates to start promoting them - sites about cars, perhaps? Over time this would be a sustainable marketing strategy and in the best interests of the company long-term.

Things often look different when you are impartial.

Yesterday I got a sale for Beanbag Bazaar via my discount code site. The cookie was set less than an hour before. However, I had no searches for Beanbag Bazaar or misspellings, but I did get a generic search for 'massive beanbags'. I write a bit more promotion than just 'Use GENERIC CODE to get 5% off' and therefore captured the fellow who wanted a big beanbag via SERPs and sent him to Beanbag Bazaar - and without a click to reveal.

Also, to follow your example - I want some polish for my car. Merchant A is offering it for £20 and Merchant B is offering it for £25. However, Merchant B is offering £10 off - making it cheaper. I wouldn't have known this if I hadn't been to a code site. When it comes down to it, the biggest pulling factor for any potential buyer is the price and if mvc allows you to get car polish cheaper at Merchant B, then Merchant B has just gained a sale that he might otherwise have lost to Merchant A.

That's fair enough if you have some relevant content and the merchant does actually have a discount code.

I'm not sure car polish is a good example to use - I can think of several examples of blokes spending ridiculous amounts of money on car polish??
That aside, merchant A can offer best value all on his own? Once he has a network of relevant sites putting his name out there he'll soon be reaping the rewards.

This sound more like a price comparison site to me? What is more likely to happen is:

1) the user goes to the car polish site, adds what he wants to the basket
2) spots the voucher code box
3) searches on google finds a voucher code site.
4) clicks on the click to reveal.
5) Finds no valid code but has a cookie dropped on his machine
6) Returns to polish site to complete the order.

Value added? ....
