Not sure how I feel about that kind of promo...i'm not sure why but it just feels a bit off?
Pop fans the world over were heartbroken to hear that the tragic news that the legendary King of Pop, Michael Jackson, passed away last night.
In memory of the King of Pop, Play have compiled his greatest works from the Jackson 5 days to Thriller and finally to the King of Pop Greatest Hits:

In very poor taste IMO.

Can't see a problem with it at all, I take it you didn't buy a newspaper either because they were using the story to sell more papers.

ok the guy's dead. what does it matter whether you promote today or in a few years?
I mean you wouldn't have a problem with promoting John Lennon or Bob Marley so why not Michael Jackson?
ok, some people might want to, but I won't be putting an animated banner on any of my sites that effectively say "Hey! Michael Jackson's dead! Why not buy some of his CDs?" on the day his death is announced.
For me it's not about whether/when you promote MJ CDs or not - it's the way it's promoted, both to consumers ("He's dead - buy his CDs") and to affiliates ("he's dead - take advantage") - I wouldn't add any creative to my sites about John Lennon or Bob Marley that made reference to the fact they were dead, as I just don't find someone's death a marketable event.

I take it you're refering to the dates on the banners as to say "hey he's dead".. ok perhaps the dates should be removed from the promotional banners.
I have promoted plays offer but didn't use the banners as i'm not a fan of banners anyway.

its not about promoting the fact that someone is dead! but about promoting the legacy they have left behind and which will continue to live long after their passing.
the point i was trying to make is that what does it really matter if your promote their music now or a few years from now, because I bet in a few years from now you would have no problem whatsoever with promoting Michael Jackson's music, so why does it matter so much whether it is one day or one decade?
Fair enough - creative is all open to interpretation. IMO the play.com creative isn't about celebrating the legacy - it's about cashing in on a celebrity's death whilst the media spotlight is at its brightest.
I'm not going to suggest anyone who uses it should be burned at the stake - just making the point that I personally don't agree with it, and won't be using it myself.
Yes, I would have no problem promoting Michael Jackson's music in the future, however I won't be promoting it via creative that points out the fact that he is dead.

You are spot on mate, and I really admire your views as they reflect mine totally.
I was making the same points in the jokes thread yesterday - it isn't about the jokes, it was about the timing of them and how sick people are for poking fun at someone who had just died !
See here mate : http://www.affiliates4u.com/forums/r...-thread-5.html

I really don't understand why all the fuss about the date on the banners, if this is the reason why it may be seen as in bad taste
Amazon have the same 1958-2009 text on their pages and the bestseller list is made up entirely of Michael Jackson's albums, so its obvious that a lot of people are buying his music.
I'm not a huge fan of Play.com for other reasons, but I personally don't think the above banners are in poor taste at all - they have the words 'Michael Jackson 1958-2009' plus images of album covers and the play logo, where is the problem?
I'm with John 100% on this,
My main problem is that as i saw it they are using it as a promotion, it doesnt matter that they have banners etc.. its the fact that they have billed it to us as an opportunity to cash in.
People will buy his records anyway but this felt like play was reminding me "Michael Jacksons dead - dont forget to get your moneys worth!".
At least amazon have set up a tribute forum so even though they will be making fortunes from it they arent making it obvious that that is their intention. Very sad news Michael Jackson has died. - music Discussion Forum
Edit - added this...
I just realised why this post got my attention in the first place - the title of the thread is "Play.com's Tribute to Michael Jackson " thats what I thought was in real bad taste as its actually just a promotion to get us to sell more records - the "dont forget to add your aff ID" gives that away!
