Unhappy Breaking News! Google Adword Issue Found

Was working with Wardy about something he stopped twice in his account today. It looks like possibly and I have not got full facts yet but one of the server locations that's showing Adwords on Google and via the partner sites such as NTL and so on

What's happening is that the end part of URL's are being messed up, actually they being reversed.. what this means is that deep links are not working and in some cases tracking is not working at all, as people can't make it to the site correctly.

We think it's something like 10% or as much as 20% of traffic is effect in this way, but as yet I have no idea as I don't know who many server locations Google Adwords works from.. I have been doing screen shots with help of others.. more information on the way.. but if noticing a dip in sales across the board, or funny or no tracking id's on all networks from Google Adword Adverts, this could be why.

Hi,

I have noticed some of my TD EPI keywords all scrambled, but I am still gaining sales from those clicks. Today's sales seem normal to me.

Yeap that's one of the issues.. looks like most networks cookies are setting, however people are not always getting to the merchant sites, and deep links are messed up in many cases also.

Got people looking at it and they seeing different things, it's all very strange.

If the actual advert url is getting corrupt before a user clicks on it, you could check it on the sponsored links search (e.g. http://www.google.co.uk/sponsoredlinks?q=credit) at each data center

Just tested a few links.

All quite random, not just deep links.

Work one minute then stop working the next.

ok if you do search on these locations

http://66.102.11.99/sponsoredlinks?q=x
http://216.239.57.104/sponsoredlinks?q=x
http://216.239.53.99/sponsoredlinks?q=x

where you see "x" put your keyword, be easier with one word keywords.

type in keywords for merchants you have deep links or tracking id's for.. and see what effect these locations have on the links.

Cheers for the heads up on this. I have noticed a few strange results today in my epi readouts.

I tend to use the old {keyword} insertion to track the performance of my ads and google seems to be scrambling the dynamic keyword insertion part of the url?

Very strange indeed.

Hmmmm

the more I'm examining this tonight the worse it looks. I know why my spend is getting a bit high today - lots of ads are being malformed.

I wonder if they will be giving any click spend back for this problem.

Ahhhhh... that explains the weird stuff I've seen in my error log. I don't send them straight to the merchant, I send them to my site.

Started at about 12:00 GMT and the last portion of the URL is reversed.. not quite sure of the pattern though, it seems to be consistent for each page.

It looks like I've got about 18% of traffic being lost in this way.

It's probably best to report some examples to Google directly, but here's some examples reformmated from my error log. The URLs are ficticious, but the length of the elements and positioning of elements is the same (so I've change widget-2001.htm to ABCDEF-1234.htm).

Visitor IP:
84.66.x.x
AdWords sends visitor to:
http://www.widgetmeister.co.uk/ABCDE-12mth.43
Correct URL is:
http://www.widgetmeister.co.uk/ABCDE-1234.htm

Visitor IP:
203.144.x.x
AdWords sends visitor to:
http://www.widgetmeister.co.uk/A.htmFEDCB
Correct URL is:
http://www.widgetmeister.co.uk/ABCDEF.htm

Visitor IP:
81.156.x.x
AdWords sends visitor to:
http://www.widgetmeister.co.uk/Amth.321GF-EDCB
Correct URL is:
http://www.widgetmeister.co.uk/ABCDE-FG123.htm

Visitor IP:
80.176.x.x
AdWords sends visitor to:
http://www.widgetmeister.co.uk/ABH123.htm-GFEDC
Correct URL is:
http://www.widgetmeister.co.uk/ABCDEFG-H123.htm
