So what should we be seeing?
Max two ads per company name?

And how will this affect ads shown on sites? Will there be less ads there too?

You should see one ad per destination domain in the display url.

AdWordsAdvisor has confirmed at WMW that :-
* example.com
* www.example.com
* example.com/aff
* www.example.com/aff
* deal.example.com
* www.deal.example.com
* deal.example.com/aff
* www.deal.example.com/aff

are all the same domain as far as the new rules are concerned.

I believe this will be the same for adsense.

Rich,

This is the source of confusion - and a central issue.

AWA talks about domain. The policy talks about URL. The two are not the same.

Here is an article where the product director of Google suggests that sub pages on the same domain won't be competing with each other - contradicting what AWA has posted:

http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3455781

Significantly:

"Advertisers will still be allowed to link to sub-pages within a site, where appropriate. There could be an ad that points to an eBay search for an item as well as an eBay store that sells that item, Kamangar said."

I just wonder if his example was specifically picked as an ebay store is a quite a different thing to promote than a general ebay search results page. Similarly, I would expect two different yahoo stores to be allowed to be promoted on the same term.

In the same thread, AWA said there world be exceptions for sites like blogspot where there are lots of separate sites, that happen just to be hosted as subdomains.

Yes - I think there is going to be a lot more subjectivity applied to the review process now.

In the medium term, it is likely that the review process will take into account the spirit of the policy - not limited to whether or not two pages simply resolve to the same domain.

For instance, Google may not want their ads hogged by Overture/Espotting reskins or white label landing pages. Such judgements would be hard to make purely programmatically as the domains may well be unique.

I think that is why AWA advisor has been somewhat vague on this issue.

Looks like the new policy is now in operation.

Surprisingly, the matching appears to be case sensitive !
