Thats exactly right.
Google has a number of different servers, and it's entirely random which one you hit, according to your location and which servers are the least busy (as there load balanced).
As a result, it can take a while for all the servers to update so they all show the same results, so if the sites new or changes have been made, you can appear in different positions each time you search.
The time is takes for all the servers to synchronize varies, but it's usually done in a couple of days.
