Nice job getting a "traditional" type of merchant onto the residual model.

Im tempted but my concern is whether many people do actually return. Any info you have such as stats on repeat customers, customer retention programs, email campaigns etc. would help.

Blackstar is a good example of a residual program that hasnt delivered for a lot of people, so while I like the idea a lot for top class sites, for just OK sites Im not so sure Id not be better off with a one time 12% from an existing partner than a lifetime 7% from Prezzybox.

I will ask for stats, see if they have any. As this is completely new to the network, I don't have any yet from the network/affiliates side of the fence to give you.

Everyone will of course benefit from the fact they offer the customer base program, the commission rate is exactly the same as they offer for the standard program. One school of thought is any extra sales that affiliate otherwise would not get are a bonus.

Prezzybox send out a regular monthly newsletter with competitions and promotions, and from time to time send special offers and discount gift vouchers to customers. In the past a company could acquire a customer from an affiliate by paying you a one time commission and then go on to market to them on and offline making even more money from the user that you would not see a penny from, this is not the case with Prezzybox.

Additional benefits to customer base programs are, if you promote vouchers or competitions that customer can sign-up for, you would normally not get a penny for these unless customer buys inside the cookie period. Now you have giving them marketing data and knowing that if they keep marketing to the users you sent and they eventually buy, even with no cookie set, you still get your commission. Before all marketing outside the cookie period would be more free custom to the merchant.

At the end of the day everyone has to make their own mind up on what type of strategy they are following, one time hits or customer retention, it's up to you. An existing merchant of Paid On Results and a board member here is about to offer this very option to affiliate (one time hit or on going commission), it will be up to you what path you pick.

A lot of people don't actually know that British NIC and Your Choice Budget are two programs that already offer customer base plus residual commission plus network commission and for the few board members here that are taking part in these programs, each of them have already seen customers come back and buy again, not bad for two site that have no real brand to speak about.

Personally, I'd take it on a case-by-case basis and weigh up, user experience, newsletters, and my own future strategy.

It's not something you can go "ooh lifetime commission - I'll have it!". There are too many variables to give a general conclusion.

Prezzybox also has a 365 day cookie via Affiliate Window but it doesn't say whether they also offer lifetime commissions even if there is no cookie.
Does anyone know if this is the case?
If not I may as well swap over to Paid On Results as I am already promoting Prezzybox.

Exactly, at the end of the day customer base commission is only another choice in the mix. Majority of affiliates will have no prior experience of this and may just stick to one time bigger commissions. Some sites for example might be based around a certain type of customer who would buy a product on a regular bases and so be better off with a customer base set-up.

I have never said customer base is the be all and end all, however past experience has taught me that once you get a user to buy from a merchant, they are more likely to purchase from that same merchant again (if the first experience was good, naturally).

Loads of merchants have the strategy of offering a high commission (in some case they don’t even do that) for first sale with a small cookie and then all future sales from that customer are the merchants. Companies know it’s cheaper to get an existing customer to buy again than it is to get new ones, customer base simply gives the affiliates the option to have a share in all sales from the users they send. You really need to think of buying season when dealing with a product merchant. Someone might buy in July for a Birthday and then not buy a thing until Christmas, but when they do resurface to buy again, your getting another slice of the pie for being the person that originally introduced the customer in the first place.

Paid On Results is the only UK network to offer customer base programs as part of the networks system set-up at this time.

Great move Clarke. I love residual income affiliate programs. If the repeat commission begins to kick-in, hopefully one day I won't have to work on Bank Holidays

If you check your affiliate account you will see you have been accepted. The longest most people with straight forward easy to understand websites should wait to join the program is a few hours at most.

    Hello all,

First and foremost please allow me to introduce myself to those who don't know me. My name is Zak and I look after all the marketing for Prezzybox.com.

I'll try and answer all of the questions as best I can and see where go from there...

Im tempted but my concern is whether many people do actually return. Any info you have such as stats on repeat customers, customer retention programs, email campaigns etc. would help.
I've not got any figures on this at the minute, but I've asked our technical chap to look into it and come back to me. As soon as I have some results I'll post them on the forum.

What I would say is that:

    1) We have a lot of repeat/repeat customers (ie people come back to us again and again - some people using us 10-20 times in total). I would suggest that the residual tracking will be of benefit with these customers.

    2) We try and retain our customers (as this is cheaper than getting new customers) by hopefully offering good customer services (free delivery for example), a good product range, and fairly competitive prices.

    3) Also we have a number of "sticky" features which we hope will entice people back to the site, such as the referals scheme - where we offer £5 gift vouchers to users friends and the users themselves, the gift reminder service, wish list, gift wizard etc.

We also run regular newsletter campaigns (monthly as a rule) and recently we sent a £10 gift voucher to all thedesignerbox.co.uk customers. We also have regular sales promotions (for example we are offering a free patio heater cover and table clamp with every patio heater at the minute).

Blackstar is a good example of a residual program that hasnt delivered for a lot of people, so while I like the idea a lot for top class sites, for just OK sites Im not so sure Id not be better off with a one time 12% from an existing partner than a lifetime 7% from Prezzybox.
I've a question (which is sort of related!!). Does the difference in commission/cookie/residual length make that much difference to an affiliate? This may be a daft question but do you think we would get more sales through affiliates if we offered a 9-10% commission as oppossed to 7%? Does the cookie make that much difference? We are reviewing our who commission structure in the run up for Christmas so I would really appreciate any feedback you have.

Prezzybox also has a 365 day cookie via Affiliate Window but it doesn't say whether they also offer lifetime commissions even if there is no cookie
At the minute we offer a 365 day cookie only and no lifetime one. Should we? My thoughts are that people invariably change jobs/computers every 1-3 years, so a cookie longer than 999 days would be pretty much redundant anyway. Am I right about this, or should we have a bigger cookie than 365 days? Again I'd appreciate the feedback.

I suppose this is the major benefit of the residual tracking in that a customer can shop from any computer at any time in the future and you the affiliate will still receive your commission.

I hope this helps (a little!). I'm really keen to work with all of the affiliates, because as far as I am cocerned it is the best form of online marketing, and one where I can justify expenditure (the commission) with actual results (sales).

If anyone wants to contact me direct then please feel free to do so and I'll happily have a chat about ways to improve our affiliate offering. My telephone number is 01827 839041. Alternatively I'll try and post a little quicker on the forum.

    Cheers for now.

    Zak.

    cheers Zak

I've got no probs adding your site to my gifts and shopping one in a big way just been snowed under recently. sure Clarke will remind me if I haven't done so in the next two weeks

My view is if you don't try things then you will never know!

Would agree about Blackstar - loved them as a buyer but am underwealmed with the results.

And completely agree about the cookie issue, to me a cookie longer than 500 days would be pointless for the issues you state.

My ideal programme - a sustainable commission, a decent cookie 365, and residual. Also payment on time helps :-)

    Hi Lee,

Thank you for that - that's great. If you need us to provide anything specific (be it data feeds, banners etc) then just let me know and we'll be happy to oblige.

Hopefully therefore - between POR and AWIN - we should have all bases covered, in that we can offer the residual tracking through POR to those that want it, and the cookie through AWIN.

    How about this ...

.... I don't know how feasible it is financially and technically but how about tracking referred purchasers from those assigned to an affiliate?

If I refered Buyer A to your site and via a send-to-a-friend mechanism they refer Buyer B. When B buys we get a smaller commission like 3% or something?

If you COULD offer that then that will give another reason to use you above others. But as said I don't know how feasible that is.

May as well come up with ideas as I let my bacon sarnie go down and wasting time before we go to the flicks.

Thanks Zak. In response to your question, we'd much rather receive 7% lifetime than 9% once-off.

We too would agree about BlackStar. Sent them thousands of customers over the years simply because of the promise of commission on repeat sales. Problem with many affiliate programs is they don't have longevity - there's a blaze of excitement and initiatives for a while and then, after a couple of years, companies lose interest.

This happened with BlackStar. They sacked their affiliate manager, so there was no one to turn to. They hiked up their prices. They got rid of their free postage and packing to anywhere in the world. Conversion ratios plummetted.

At least they've reinstated their FREE P&P in the last fortnight, albeit only to the UK/Ireland, so sales will hopefully go up again.

The important thing, if you are hoping to pay residually is longevity and sustainability.

Cookies are useless for the long term, as you say. People change computers or delete cookies.

We sent thousands of visitors to IWantOneofThose.com which DGM2 promised 9,999 days of repeat commission on. Only thing is DGM2 changed their tracking software and all those thousands of visitors were no longer linked to us for the residual income. That's why we only accept database-tracking now if we align ourselves with residual-income paying affiliate programs/biz ops.
