So after a long battle I finally get to page 1 for 'sports insurance.' I then cancel my adword keyword sports insurance and then i'm back to page 4. So I re apply for sports insurance and hey, i'm back to page 1 again. Is this normal?

I've just searched and you're on page 4-5 again. Have you cancelled the ad again? Was the effect happening almost immediately when you took the phrase in or out, or was there a lag of some days or longer?

I must admit I've not heard of anything like this before, and it's very disturbing if you can reproduce this effect on the natural search results just by adding or removing a keyword, if I understand you correctly.

Were you advertising on Google only, Google + search partners, and/or on the Content ads?

More information might help to track down what's going on.

I reapllied the keyword 'Sports Insurance' went back once more to page 1 (5th to be precise). Great. Then the next day (this morning) I'm back to position 41. So I went from 41-5-41-5-41 in the space of a couple of days. Not sure if its instantaneous after the keyword cancellation/reinstatement - I'm just gutted tbh as I thought I'd cracked it.

I'm on Google and content ads.

I`ve never heard of this to be honest, and can't see how it could happen as a result of adwords. There would be uproar if it did!

It's possible that you're site was down at 41, but during a reranking was put up to position 5. However, it takes a couple of days for data to sync between all the different scenarios, and which server you access at any given time changes according to how busy they are.

So it's more than likely just a coincidence, and you are hitting different servers each time you search, and getting different results because of that.

That definately sounds like a server sync issue. Give it a couple of days and it will work itself out and all servers will show the same result.

It's likely that you'll be at number 5 in the end, but this isn't guaranteed obviously. In the meantime, don't do anything SEO wise until all the servers are showing the result. You need to allow it to stabilise first before you try and improve, which ever position you end up, otherwise you won't be able to specifically see the results of your new work.

Do you have any settings that might be out of the norm - a Google search that defaults to a different country or a foreign language perhaps?

Try it in a different browser and see what happens?
