A quick question, when split testing ads is it better to set the ad serving to optimise or rotate?

You should never let Google choose what ads to serve. Keep testing and make 50 clicks a benchmark for split testing ads. SO just go for Standard rotation more evenly.
Also never choose 'accelerated' option unless you are doing a promotion thats ending.

    Thanks for the reply, zaggernaut

I did have it set to 'optimise' thinking that google would automatically show the ad with the better CTR more often, but I can see that it probably makes more sense to have the ads rotate evenly and then I can manually delete/edit the ad with the lower CTR
