Well, I gave Adwords a go for the first time today with a free £30 voucher I had.. I spent it all, with a maximum of 30p/click (too much or too little?) advertising LOVEFiLM.. I got 132 clicks but not a single sign up!

Obviously I'm new at this, and there is probably a lot I have to learn, but can anyone recommend any good resources, whether they be online or books I have to buy?

What I don't understand is, regardless of the fact that I may have targetted wrong or used bad keywords, I still got 132 clicks, and the fact that they clicked a LOVEFiLM advert must mean they were interested, so why not sign up to the free trial?

Does anyone know on average what percentage of clicks sign up to free trials like this..

Sorry if my questions are stupid!

    1% or less.

I don't do PPC but I would advise going longtail. I am aware of some consultancy websites in this area so looking at their websites might give you some food for thought:

Specifically regarding lovefilm, a couple of years ago you may have had better luck promoting them via PPC.

Now though, I think you may be seeing a lot of visitors who have possibly already been members (or still are) and are not eligible to sign up as new members for the free trial.

Although without knowing what keywords you are targetting or what your ad copy is, it is difficult to say.

Just my opinion and of course I could be wrong.

IMO - A few years ago you would have turned a packet with lovefilm as said - but now - dont bother. - Try another more niche market - IMO lovefilm dedupe so much that you are unlikely to get a lead- they have the market covered.

If I were you, get another £30 free adwords connected to another email and CC and start again.

Unfortunately IMO you started with the wrong company to PPC to. Those days of £30 a lead have gone.

You could try something less mass-market where you can get a high position for a 2 or 3 pence?
Your £30 could last a few weeks this way and it gives you the chance to learn from your mistakes at 2p a time rather than 30p?

But I really can't think of anything that someone wouldn't already have covered..

    Anyone got any ideas?

That's the point - you want something which isn't covered.

    Hi,

I thought I would tag onto this thread instead of starting a new one.

I am about to attempt an adwords campaign and could do with a little advice to minimise losses. I believe I have found a niche that has low competition so I should get low cost per click and am planning on only targetting my adds to people searching for the product or even "buy product" etc.

Could anyone please help with some general advice and general mistakes that are made by inexperienced people?

    Thanks,

CooperOIl - The first thing I would say is you need to know exactly which keywords are converting to sale

example, you spend £10 on ads and get £20 commission giving £10 profit (100% ROI)

but if you know which keywords are converting you could get that £10 spend down to maybe £5 by getting rid of the keywords which don't convert and still get £20 commission, giving £15 profit but now your ROI is 300%

I consider myself a beginner at adwords so I too would appreciate any words of wisdom from the more experienced PPCers

So how do I know which keywords will convert?

Or is it a case of starting multiple campaigns with different keywords and keeping a close check on what is converting and what isn't and dropping the poor ones?

You won't necessarily know which keywords will convert beforehand

Or is it a case of starting multiple campaigns with different keywords and keeping a close check on what is converting and what isn't and dropping the poor ones?
Yes, but what I personally do is start a campaign, within this campaign I would have a few adgroups and then I track each individual keyword within an adgroup.

After a few clicks you will be able to see which keywords are converting, and importantly which keywords are NOT converting, then you delete these non-converting keywords and concentrate on the ones which do convert to sale

Sorry for my lack of understanding, but what do you mean about campaign within a campaign? Also what should I realistically be budgeting per day if I am serious?

It isn't a campaign within a campaign - you create a campaign which contains adgroups within it

The daily budget question is impossible to answer without knowing exactly what you intend to promote, the only way to know is to try it
