Ok, so this is what this issue is.
I was doing some research for a niche for a new campaign and using google keyword tool.
I typed in the generic keyword phrase for the niche and then chose exact match only, and sorted the list by volume.

Now, the generic keywordphrase (2 words) gets 880 searches p/month. But right at the top there is a keyword phrase that gets 33100 searches (exact match) p/month. The strange thing is, this phrase has 9 words in it. That's right....9 words.

Could this really be possible? Or is the tool playing up?

    cheers guys,
    Marc

    Hey James,

Just tried again on google and gave me the same result...hmmm...Perhaps I'll leave it and try again tomorrow.

The seobook tool is telling me that the generic now gets 9 searches p/month which also seems wrong...

G's keyword tool is wild to say the least.

There are always large sways in the figures.

If your looking to rely on these numbers always double check across different tools to get a better picture.

    Now you tell me.

I created an entire site on the assumption that the market was missing a particular exact phrase, only to discover that the keyword tool was giving duff data.

Oh well if you don't try.....

If you dont want to go to the trouble of setting up a new site in the future then create a quick page on an existing site and create an Adwords campaign for the keyword(s) with exact match (i.e. the same as your initial keywords search) and let it run to see how true the traffic figure is.

All your after is the impressions figure to get an idea of search volumn for that particular keyword.
It may cost a little but you will have an idea provided you are on the first page of G with your ad.

PS. You may also want to pop in the settings and set the option so that your ad display is accelerated.
