I'm running a small Adwords campaign over the next few days (really to test the water).

Over the last 8 odd hours (since starting the campaign) there have been:

27,000 impressions resulting in 31 clicks.

Is PPC clicks likely to result in a higher potential conversation rate verse visits from the organic serps?

well targeted PPC should yeild better conversion ratios than organic

if you've only had 31 click throughs from 27,0000 impressions then I'm afraid that's not very good.

your Click Through Rate is like 0.001%.. for example if targeting even basic you should be able to get it to at least 3% and with lots of work up to very high double figures (in many instances) so I suggest that you do a few (if not all) of the following :

    A) ensure the ad position is high enough to get seen easier, ideally 2nd to 5th position for visibility and conversion (3rd is often the sweet spot)
    B) you break your adgroups down to tightly targeted adgroups themed around main keywords
    C) write good strong adverts with the main adgrou keyword in it or use dynamic insertion option.
    D) use phrase and exact matching options to avoid Google taking liberties with expanded broad match
    E) use negative keywords to ensure you ad is only shown to those you would want to see it
    F) link to the most relevant landing page you can find, the index page isn't always best

I'd concentrate on ensuring your keywords, matching, adcopy and click through are sorted first, then tweak landing pages etc.. you can't convert traffic you aren't getting.. so you need to ensure you are targeting exactly the traffic you are trying to.

One thing you may be willing to do:

Use an analytic tool to determine the exact string of keywords/long tail keywords that drives traffic to your site via organic listing.
-Build a highly targeted PPC ads around the relevant keywords and let those ads land on the relevant pages.

probably the biggest tip if you're just starting out is this:

Turn your ads off for the content network

You can do it in 'campaign settings'.

Google automatically shows your ads in search results AND on AdSense publisher sites ('the content network'). I'd bet most of your 27,000 impressions have come from the content network, which is a totally different mindset to search.

The site is already generating a few long tail terms in the SERPs however this will come with time - the site really only went properly live yesterday when the bulk of products were added.

The obvious thing for higher, more specific targetting is to target a specific brand and direct it to a specific brand category page, however is allowed in Adwords? E.g. Great Savings on Prada Handbags. If this isn't allowed, then the majority of longtail terms go out the window!

Well it depends quality of your ads, the landing page copy and also your offer. I did generate sales from PPC but there is learning curve to master it. But in general,

1.) are you bidding keywords that relevant to your niche?
2.) did you include your keywords in your ad copies? (headline, description line and URL)
3.) how did you track your ad? and conversion?
4.) stop the cotent network bidding
5.) how many relevant keywords you are bidding with your site?
6.) did you divert your traffic to the specific landing page which is relevant to the keyword bidding?

These are so far the essential criteria you have to adjust before running a successful PPC campaign.
