  Celebrity names in magazines keywords

Hi all

I'm compiling a list of keywords for PPC campaigns promoting mags and there are many of the searches that has celeb names in it like "cindy crawford ABC magazine". I was making a list of negative keywords and listing down the names, but halfway through I was wondering whether I'm doing it correctly to not bid on these type of keywords with celeb names in them. Will you?

Waste of money. Bidding on celebrity names will not generally bring you traffic which will convert into sales for magazines. People usually just want to oggle at pics, read gossip etc.

We were number one in Google for one of the most famous actresses in the UK. We got flooded with traffic, but no matter whether we tried to sell posters or DVDs of the actress, we got very few conversions.

Should I put them in the negative list? or should I just not bid on them?
What if a guy searched for "buy cindy crawford ABC magazine"?

I'm not so sure if many people would search for "buy cindy crawford ABC magazine". They should be searching on the name of the magazine if they want to buy it. If they are searching for "cindy crawford ABC magazine" then the likelihood is they are looking for a photoshoot or article of the celebrity in question; it is unlikely that will lead to a magazine subscription.

It would be a mammoth task to negate each and every celebrity, but it might be worth doing the perennials like David Beckham.

You must negate words like pics, pictures, photos, download, video etc.

We have a template negative keyword list which we have grown over the years which comes to several hundred common non-converting words, and we customise it for each campaign.

I've had the number 1 spot on Google for a famous pop singer for a few years now and I tried selling posters and CD's and got nowhere. Even Adsense doesn't show any ads on this page. I've now put up some adult friend finder ads which brings in a trickle of income.

If anyone knows of an article on 'How to monetize the one handed surfer' , let me know
