How To Making Appealing Images?

Hi

How do you go about creating images like the ones off Mobiles template? Which program (or programs) is used for making such images from homemobiles like this one?

I have been working hard on my site to move it over to Wordpress and it now works ok with the new template so I can add content but creating images I know very little about. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I like Fireworks, but if you're on a tight budget you could try Gimp.

Thanks for that. Gimp looks amazing for opensource software. Downloaded it and trying it out now. Looks like it is capable of doing all that I want and more besides.
