WordPress lets you use the same database for multiple installations by letting you specify a 'table prefix' at install time. If you use the install wizard to set up your config it's in the first step of the wizard. The installations must be in separate directories on disk.
If you set up your subdomain through cpanel you'll be able to specify a directory for the subdomain's web root. You can have one installation in there, and another in your main web directory. Then just specify a different table prefix when you install each copy of WordPress.
