    Hi,

Managed to sort permissions so I could use correct permalinks although can't seem to get it open for me to edit the themes code files?? (I want to make changes to the .php files) When I set a permission to say 777 on the main folder in my ftp the folder updates but the files inside stay with their old permission? I thought if you changed the main folder all files inside would also update to the same. Am I missing something here?? Or is it because ultimately I'm using a free host (000webhost)?

Sorry lots of Q's in one!!
Hope this makes sense to someone

You may need to check a box that says something like, recurse to all sub-folders and files.

Alternatively, just change the CHMOD on each of the files you want to work on.

Don't forget to change it back again!

Ok first thing you need to check if the files under the folder are under your user permission or nobody permission.

If its nobody then you wont be able to make change you need to contact your hosting provider and get your ownership of files changes to user.user for all php files.

Second problem can be you are just updating the permission for the folder.

For recursive permission change to need to do it as chomd 777 foldername -R

this can be done only if you are root user..Ask your hosting provider they should do this for you.

AAhh Free hosting ..hope your issues is resolved soon good luck

Brilliant all done! Ticked the box to change all directories & folders within and it worked.

Seem to be coming across some restrictions with using a free host but want to stick with this for now till I get my first site live, then will look into some more reliable paid hosting. For the cost of a domain name I can't complain for the moment.

    Cheers to all replys, Steve

Setting file permissions to 777 isn't a good idea - it's giving far too much control over your site to other people, not all of whom may have your best interests at heart.
