Hi guys, I am looking at doing a PriceRunner type price comparison website just to test the waters. I was looking at PriceTpaestry etc but would prefer it in Wordpress or Drupal or some existing CMS which I would know quite well.

It'll basically be like PriceRunner or Google Shopping but with a twist and ideally have many hundreds of products, so I think that's not going to work with Wordpress either assuming the website gets half-popular, unless I rewrite half of Wordpress.

Anyone done/doing price comparison and with what CMS? I did a similar site about 5 years ago, but it was completely custom PHP. Would be interested in hearing what CMS you might have used.

I don't do true price comparison as I can't be bothered with mapping all those products! However, all my sites run on wordpress with price tapestry. Price Tapestry also now has a WP plugin, although I haven't had the need to use that.

But tbh I don't think it very practical to do a true comparison site on a CMS, unless of course you are going niche. Otherwise you will end up doing a post for every item??

It's a blumming nightmare doing price comparison even on a small scale with PT - mainly because all the feeds work against you. I think you can only do it seriously by scraping several times a day or be doing enough volume to get a custom xml.
That said - I don't see much of a future for any comparison sites these days?

Because people use the comparison site, say thank you very much for pointing me to the best deal then go to a cashback site to complete?

That isn't what I was thinking of but, yeah, that's another reason not to bother too

I was thinking more about the number of sites that have been demoted and that google do it themselves.

I'm not convinced price comparison is completely dead.. It just needs a shake up.

I've been considering Drupal as that seems more suited to what I'm going to be doing... I usually avoid pre-built scripts unless it's going to make it a lot easier for me, whereas my experience with every CMS except Wordpress has been the opposite...
