Right - I've discovered the delights of php and mysql and dynamic pages so now I'm raring to go and join the 'I've had trillions of pages indexed by google this last half hour' club - but I'm having to think of my bandwidth - nearly outgrown 40 GB (the really big one) so

do dynamic pages use as much bandwidth as the common or garden 'click, copy and paste ones' or

does the content get pulled from the merchants site and only the teeny weeny bit of code from my server?

also - I'm going to host another site on another server - so I need something with all the bells and whistles, plenty of bandwidth and not expensive - and not 1&1 cos that's who I'm with at the moment - any recommendations?

    and finally:

what's the difference between roast beef and pea soup?

most people can roast beef (Oliver's favourite joke)

If you are importing product feeds into mysql then creating pages from that then yes, the bandwith used is the same as if it was a static page. The only additional bandwidth usage is the occasional download of data for inserting into mysql.

If you are using a live feed like Awin Shop window, Amazon webservices, Mirago, Espotting etc, then the server pulls that data in, then sends out the normal page to the visitor, so these types of pages use more bandwidth than just serving the static page.

I out grew my old hosts a few months ago and decided I didn't really want to keep moving sites between hosts so got a good dedicated server from ev1servers.net, they are based in the US which might put some off, but it results shows fine in search engines as long as you use a UK domain. I choose them after a recommendation from a few people on here and I havent been dissapointed.

Elaine, I've outgrown by shared hosting as well and after Xmas i'm going over to a dedicated server.

In ASP you can set the proxy server to cache your pages for a certain amount of time and this is what i've done on all my dynamic pages.

I make sure that they get refreshed evry 3 days and hopefully this will reduce bandwidth and load.

Nor sure if you can do this with PHP?

In the new year i'm going over to a bells and whistles Server 2003 dedicated server with lots of bandwidth and 24/7 monitoring etc....for £99+vat/mth and after 24 months you get to own the server!!!

On the hosting front I'd recommend beamhost - although they're servers are based in the US - I've got .co.uk domains listed in google uk with no problem - and I think they now have servers in the UK too (or are getting some)

Their tech support has been second to none - sometimes even replying to emails within an hour at weekends and evenings

And of course if you sign up to them through AF you can get a very nice commission payment back from them to which should cover a few months hosting fees

I use ev1servers.net too. I think I pay around £70 pm for a dedicated windows (with helm cp) with 700GB of transfer a month. You also get up to 7 i/ps with the one account.

The only problem as mentioned is that you have to have a .co.uk extention to appear in the uk results of google.

ev1servers are also very quick for support issues and always answer 'reboot' requests at the dead of night.
