Use vb.net or php to build product feed site?

Hi All

I am considering building a product feed site.

I see that many people here use php, and sometimes share scripts useful for product feed sites.

I know vb.net, and have been impressed by its capabilities, but have only a little php experience. Given this, I just wondered if anyone had any thoughts on which language would be best for me to build a product feed site. I suppose what I am saying is, do you think the ready availability of php scripts might outweigh any advantage of vb.net?

Use what you know......thats what myself and Jon do.

Jon will soon be re-writing my site in ASP.NET, at the moment it runs in just basic asp.

The big difference main difference between to two as far as i can see (apart from the code itself ) is that most PHP stuff (scripts,tools) is free whereas asp.net you tend to have to pay for.

We try to write as many scripts as we can ourselves, you can bever really fully customise somebody else's script for your own site.

The one thing we like about asp is database stuff seems to be a doddle and if you use an Access database it can be sorted on the desktop and then sent to the server....

.NET still goes wooosh over my head but Jon is starting to get to grips with it.

I think Jon (another one) from Natural Instinct uses asp.net a lot......he may have some ideas....

I'd go for the PHP and mysql option, the servers are cheaper than windows ones, and it is portable over both linux and windows.

Where as ASP.net is probably protable however it will be some sort of custom addon that not many host will have on there linux boxes.

As for product feeds intergration.

It quite simple to do, just get your product feed from who ever and then phase it out and add it to a database for faster searching.

I have a couple of scripts you can view if you need to see how i done it,
but i found it quite easy, and have built both a kelkoo style comparison site and a simple product catalogue.


CRap for seo as i don't have the time to be writing articles for 70k + products however all the information in there.
