I haven't looked at the google box, but try adding
form {
display: inline;
}
to your css. This was the only way I could get some forms on a site of mine to not take up too much space.
just placed google search box and can't seem to get rid of the bottom margin - tried using css and '0' for padding and margins - but there's still that annoying space below the search box.
any ideas please

I dont use the google box, but setting form margins to 0px should do it, does with all my other forms etc.
add this to your style sheet:
form { margin: 0px; }
