Does anyone think this is possible, or is their pr7 page with 50k+ links, hosted on a pr9 site with 100m links simply too far ahead?

I think you'll get more clicks from the serp than wikipedia so that should take you to No.1 in time.

Nothing u probably aren't already doing i'm sure but try more links from pages with 'search engine optimisation' in the url and meta - basic yeah - but try it and let me know how u get on

I'm not going to monetize it, as its more hassle than its worth trying to sell seo... my time would be better spend working on sites where I get all of the prodits forever, rather than a cut of them for the length of a contract. I could throw ads on it in its current form, but then that harms its ability to get links. Realistically my monetizing plan will be to sell it outright at some point, preferably after outranking wiki.

The meta description (if thats what you mean) isn't counted as a ranking factor, so that won't help. I don't think I can influence the clickthrough rates enough to make any real difference either - the main factor that will decide where anyone ranks on such a competitive term like this will be backlinks.

Easy to beat wiki - you just have to look at where there links come from and the anchor text, then you'll see the way to beat them is SO easy!
