I've been checking out some of my competitor sites using Alexa and have noticed a few of them are using social bookmarking types sites. Ones which let you save your bookmarks online, sync them with other machines and share them with others. Sites like Xmarks, mister-wong, linkagogo etc.

I admit, I hadn't heard of most of these and never used them. Are they a valid tool to help gain back links to a site, or even traffic in general? Should I spend time signing up for them and submitting my favourite links to my sites?

Yeah definitely, it's well worth it.

The good thing is that it doesn't take long to do either, submitting your site to sites like Digg can be done in around 15 seconds :P

You should definitely give it a try.

Since social networking, link sharing and bookmarking is in trend and is popular among many marketers and others, you can indeed except an increase in traffic flowing to your website if not a backlink.

yes, they are awsome, BUT!! do not make the mistakes that many make as they try to use programs to automate the backlinks.
Google is smarter than those automated backlink/posting tools..
so be careful, especially with the lates google engine updates.

I would be interested to know if anyone has done any research? Has any numbers as to exactly how effective social bookmarking is?

I wouldn't spend too much time on any submission-type links (bookmarking, blog comments, profile links) etc, as they are far less valuable than they used to be (if they have any value at all). If you feel compelled to use them, do so only as a part of a wider mix of higher quality link-types.

In my opinion, a network has to be created in the social bookmarking websites and only then they can be good for getting backlinks. If you don’t have a network there, it is not possible to get quality backlinks through the social bookmarking websites.

As part of a complete link building strategy social bookmarking links certainly hold their weight. Your not going to achieve no.1 rankings for competitive terms using them alone, but it's about the complete link building strategy and I'd certainly reccomend incorporating them.
