OK - I've seen the link exchange thread above, but I want to ask about requesting links from sites I've not previously had any contact with.

Exactly how do you go about aproaching a site owner to ask for link?

There's little to no benefit for the other site owner to link to my own, as far as they're concerned until 30 seconds ago I didn't exist. So exactly how do you ask a site owner if they'd mind linking to your site?

    Bootfit,
I would also like to hear from someone out there that could say exactly how they find webesites they want to link to and how they interact with the webmaster to get them to link back. I find there are soo many people that tell you how not to do it and very few people willing to say exactly how.

The website i am working on is Like Mobile and i'm learning how to do SEO as i go.

    Matt

There are lot of seo tools that help you identify sites similar to your niche. If you can't afford the tools, spend some time on Bing/Google to research into sites similar to your niche. I'm not sure if the good old link exchange still works. The new norm now a days is contributing articles. You could prepare before hand the article or a few topics that you think would benefit the site you want to get a link back from and give them a snippet or some topics.

P.S: You might have a higher success rate reaching out to sites that are ranked beyond the 10th page. Those site owners are usually trying their best to move up in the rankings, so good content is something that 90% of the time they wouldn't reject. Also the fact that their site is already indexed in Google would be a benefit for you.

A link exchange is a confederation of websites that operates similarly to a web ring. Webmasters register their web sites with a central organization, that runs the exchange, and in turn receive from the exchange HTML code which they insert into their web pages. In contrast to a web ring, where the HTML code simply comprises simple circular ring navigation hyperlinks, in a link exchange the HTML code causes the display of banner advertisements, for the sites of other members of the exchange, on the member web sites, and webmasters have to create such banner advertisements for their own web sites.
The banners are downloaded from the exchange. A monitor on the exchange determines, from referral information supplied by web browsers, how many times a member web site has displayed the banner advertisements of other members, and credits that member with a number of displays of its banner on some other member's web site. Link exchanges usually operate on a 2:1 ratio, such that for every two times a member shows a second member's banner advertisement, that second member displays the first member's banner advertisement. This page impressions:credits ratio is the exchange rates
