SPLUT

Hi,
Has anyone used splut.co.uk ?
I registered as an affiliate ages ago, just before the Middle Ages, and never heard any more. No a/c, user login or password details, and they/he never responded to numerous emails.
Any wise words from anyone who uses them.

Steve

Steve,

We don't have an affiliate scheme as such, although we do have a referral scheme, whereby your site can appear in our recommended sites page.

I don't recall any such request from you, but many apologies if we are to blame for any lack of response.

How long ago did you contact Splut with no response ?

Splut is no Google, that's for sure, but it's value is in the fact it contains only hand-reviewed UK sites.

(Apologies for not responding on this thread sooner, I've been waiting for EZBoard to remind me of my password, and ended up re-registering)

Splut is the only UK-directory I submit all of my URLs too, as it's the only one worth the effort that I've found. I like the system whereby you get a higher listing for a recip link, and the option of PPC if you're submitting to a competitive category (although, I've not yet used the PPC feature).

I hope that tells a lot more about what I think of splut rather than saying "yes, it's OK" or "no, it's not OK"

So is it worth sticking £25 in to give it a try?

By the way I kind of answer my own question here by saying I will try it, just want other people's feedback.

Also can you track per keyword or is it campaign like Espotting (or do you just buy a space in one section and that’s that).. I am going to use my tracking system as I am going to list 8 sites with them so I want to make sure I am getting value for money.. but looks like the clicks are cheap on most areas.

SplutAdim you can reply to this if you like as be interesting to hear what you have to say from an insider point of view.

How bizarre, I just done a search on the "search phrase placement" part of Slupt and one of my sites is listed.. Looks like it's my listing from Espotting that's being used and it even shows what I am paying per click.

I wonder if the £25 I just deposited on Splut was a waste of time, as I can't very well go head to head against myself for the same phrase.

I've had some PPC links for search and directory terms on Splut for just over a month now. Placed at either No1 or No2 for all terms.

I've spent a total of 74p so far...

LOL well I don't mind spending some money, but I just tried to submit a site that I would be paying the top amount to be number 1 however I was rejected because my site was not listed, so looks like I have to submit all 8 of them first before I can spend any of my money.. This is far form the most user-friendly system I have ever come across

Here was the message I got back after I sumited a site

Quote:
Your site has been submitted for review. (200)

The reviewing process may take up to one week.

If your site is accepted, you will receive an email with further information.

NOTE: Your site may be accepted into a category that the reviewing team deems more appropriate.

I sure hope I don't get rejected for any of them or it's going to have been totally pointless putting my money in. Also I really have to use a tracking URL or again it's a waste of time being listed, as I won't know if I am chucking my money away.. I have put in my tracking URL but will see if they are cool with that or reject that.

It took me about five attempts to get the PPC campaign live, as I kept getting error messages stating my site had been previously rejected (Despite never having submitted to them before).

I have to agree that it is not at all user friendly, and when my £25 runs out (in about 3 years lol), I won't bother funding it again.

The reason for this is that we have an agreement with Espotting to backfill our search results with their content.

However, Splut paid listings always appear before any Espotting listings. So if you're a customer of ours, your bids will appear first.

Splut is predominantly a directory, rather than a search engine, and we do not backfill the directory. All content is Splut content.

Quote:
LOL well I don't mind spending some money, but I just tried to submit a site that I would be paying the top amount to be number 1 however I was rejected because my site was not listed[/quote] Splut allows you to bid for your sites that are in our directory. So if you're trying to place a bid for a site that doesn't exist yet, we invite you to submit it.

Such is the nature of hand reviewed sites, we cannot simply allow a site because you're prepared to bid on a keyword/phrase.

We agree that the interface could do with some improvement, and we are working on this at the moment.

For sure, I understand the whole quality thing.. it was just the fact is said you can't do that as your have not listed your site.. and I was sitting here thinking adding my site and paying for it that you would have shown a screen saying, your site is not listed yet please complete these details and because your ready to spend some cash we will put your site to the top of the review pile along with the other folk ready to spend cash. That's what I would do if I owned Splut.

So if you make it more user friendly and also add priority to folk willing to pay for a listing (that doesn't mean you get listed if your site is a load of old pants LOL) I bet you would do a lot better also if you raised the min spend to say 3p a click and operated some affiliate program based on giving folk search boxes or special listing pages and you where willing to hand over 30% of any money made per click after someone done a search you would find Splut would become even more popular as you would have thousands of sites linking to you and so on.. anyway it's your business but you do have potential to make more of it just hope your bosses can see that.

Well I am happy to report they are very fast at getting your site listed. I submitted 5 and they are all online.

4 of them I had tracking urls for but they only allowed 2 of them to be used??? Will try and make contact see if I can use the tracking URL with the others as it's only by tracking the results will I know if it's worth while paying more money when it runs out otherwise it's blind advertising and of no use when I have so many places I could send my cash. still looks like a good enough service, has a few things that could be improved on but I am sure in time they will come.
