The difference between a good link and a bad link

I'm just trying to get my head round seo.

Correct me if i am wrong but google rates a site higher if it has more links from other sites. I have read today that not all links are helpfull any reason why, and how do i know to avoid them??

The quality/page rank of the sites linking to you is the biggest factor......

If I really stuck me head out I might say it was the only factor.

i'll be busy looking at the rankings now. In fact ive just added the toolbar so i'll be whizzing round the web seeing how well others do..
