How do you know your not wasting money?

So how do you know?

I pay for Overture, AdWords and Espotting, I know exactly what I spend and I know what sales I get. But and you me find this interesting, I really don't know what of the keywords is making more money. I know, sound like an armature here

Anyway that got me thinking! People that link direct to a merchants site, how do you know that your spend on a certain keywords is being effective, or do you look at it on a whole spend basis? Example, I spend £50 a month on overture with merchant x and make £100 each month type of thing.

Also how do you monitor your spend to sales ratio? Do you have to do a bit of detective work, from PPC engines stats and Network stats?

I can monitor this because I use mainly Adwords and CJ - so when I am clearly making money from a merchant I can use separate ads and SID codes to find out EXACTLY how much I am making from a particular keyword. I link through directly to merchants but have set up identical pages but with different codes to achieve the same using Espotting. I work on achieving 100% profit so can look at my spend every day on Google and my income on CJ and adjust my bids accordingly.
