  Optimising for other SE's

Simple question

Do you SEO for engines like Yahoo & MSN in a different way to Google ?

I must admit i've never been one to sit there working out keyword density and anchor links etc, my idea has been to build content thats of use to visitors and if i do better than someone else i;ll be above them in the rankings.

All has been going really well for quite a while but after the last Google update a lot (30-40%) of my traffic has gone as it was all from Google.

I don;t get much at all from Yahoo or MSN.

Are there specific things to do for these engines that are different than Google or is it just luck that you get in.

Yahoo & MSN accounts for less than 10% of my traffic whereas before the G update Google was accounting for at least 60%.

What i'd like to do is get an even amount from each engine so that a drop on one is not that damaging.

Any thoughts????

Carol

Me 2! Sounds like I'm in the same position as you.

My SEO tactics so far have just really been focused on the really basic stuff like H1's, focused achor text (mainly internal) and nothing dodgy like hidden text.

One site is getting 7 times as may referals from Ask as from Google, but I'm not sure if that is because it is doing well in Ask, badly in Google or a bit of both! Ask has index 5 times as many pages as Google.

I get nothing at all from ASK...3 hits today but then the ask spider doesn;t visit me much at all, only 10 times so far this month compared to around 3500 from MSN......

Is there any way to get ask, yahoo, msn bots to come round more often.....google comes every day!!!

Rich, are a lot of your books pages taking content from the merchant as most of my merchant-content pages have gone right down in the rankings.

Another quick one - does anyone know the current identifier for Googlebot as my stats package is still using the old one

^Googlebot/2\.\d \((\+)*http://www.googlebot.com/bot.html\)$

My book pages only really take stock level and price info from the merchants so there isn't really that much content on them. I thought all the pages were possibly a bit too similar so since the mid-dec update I have changed to a new layout that includes reviews from Amazon as others seem to be showing those without hurting their rankings. The change hasn't noticably affected traffic, but time will tell.

Same with me really - I tend to find my sites do better in ask - I'm also a bit too afraid to change my approach too much as i consider myself fortunate to be where I am.

All I can think is it's one of two things - I build all my sites in notepad - I assume this may also be true of Rich given his techie guru posts all the time I wonder if google prefers the more chunky output from something like dreamweaver or frontpage.

Also maybe its the style of writing - from past experience it seems people tend to rank best with one SE across all their sites.

I'm mid project on some decent stats software at the mo, but this is something I want to look at in more detail soon.
