what's this 'blog and ping' method?

apparently the "blog & ping" method gets a new site spidered/crawled within 24-48hours?!

Is this hype, is it true?

how (exactly) is it achieved?

I read it in michael campbells newsletter 'internet marketing secrets'.

Not really all that clued up with blogs, but done I think I know what this is about from some RSS stuff I've done in the past.

Some of the RSS systems will ping news servers to let them know that they have been updated. These news servers will then retrieve the latest RSS feed for inclusion on their sites.

On a related note - if anyone has an example of how to send such a ping I'd be interested in seeing that.

On wordpress it says

"Pingback the URLs in this post
When this box is checked the WordPress pingback engine will scan all of the linked URLs in your post to see if they return a XML-RPC header to indicated that they support pingback. This can slow down the posting process quite a bit so if you don't plan on using this for one particular post it's probably best to uncheck it. "

*confused*
norra clue what it means.

I think the technique involves making new posts in an external blog, these posts link to brand new pages in your site. By pinging, you can get new pages crawled by certain SEs in record time. Hence Blog and Ping.

Hi blog and ping works like this, setup a blog on blogger.com the theory is that once you do this then google will come and visit your blog once you start entering
content into it, I think the 24/48hrs is a bitunrealisitic but i got on yahoo within about four days ish, still not on google yet but i guess in time it will happen, Once you have done that if you don't have a yahoo account , e-mail will do once that is done, go to my yahoo which is in the middle then add your blog to there rss feed which in turn puts your blog on my yahoo then yahoo will visit so the theory goes. Next go to www.pingomatic.com and put your blog in the form this sends your blog to about 10-15 blog directories which is called pinging it maybe a good idea to register with feedburner also so you can put your blog on as many rss feed sites as possible which drives traffic to it. I would ping once a day to much won't achieve a great deal. I am showing up on the search engines slowly but surely after about 1-2 weeks
but as well as pinging i submitted my blog to a few directories also.

p.s when you setup your blog in settings you need to select add your blog to our listings select yes. On the settings publish make sure notify weblogs is set to yes.

Yeah, blogger.com isn't always in tip top shape. I couldn't tell you the number of times I've tried to make a post and their site was down.

I guess I do the blog and ping method. Everytime I make a post, I go to Pingomatic and ping some of the places my RSS feed is listed. It does help, MyYahoo comes in third or fourth for bringing in traffic to my blog. The only problem with just using Pingomatic is that you have to ping the rest of the sites that your RSS feed is listed on manually.
