Does hosting on same server affect SERPs?

Hi All

I'm thinking of starting up some new sites. From a database perspective, it would be easiest to host them with my current host. However, I want Google to regard any new domains of mine as distinct sites. Would it matter much from a SERPs point of view if I had both domains hosted (with unique DNS) on the same server? Obviously I want each site to benefit from mutual cross-linking. I know there probably is an effect but I just wondered how significant it was?

Cheers

In the past, most designers thought that different server IP's where better. However, google does state that as long as the hosting is done correctly, sharing the same server should not affect your ranking, and the algo currently puts a higher emphasis on content and relevant. The only thing reltated to your question that I have been able to find, was that in the recent google patent, site age (or registered age) can affect your sites importance (i.e. those domains only validated for 12 months are rated lower as there is a stronger posability that they are spam sites...and effectively worthless)
I am currently running around 10 sites all on the same server (same hosting providor) and do benefit by being able to used databases "across sites". This doesnt appear to have had any effect on the sites. The original site still has the same PR, etc as it did before.
