  same website, different domain endings?

If you have 3 sites: www.example.com and www.example.co.uk, www.example.net, all showing the same content but not redirecting- just free-standing websites, what is the best way to clean them up- ie. just get 1 site with the info and the rest redirecting to it?

My problem is that one version is listed on yahoo and msn and another on google for the relevant keyword.

bit concerned about getting fined for duplicate content.

any ideas?

chris

Google will deterim the main site based on nameserver TLD it resolves to.

Ie if you have ns1.mydomain.co.uk and ns2.mydomain.co.uk it will deem mysite.co.uk as the main site and drop rank on the other variants.

You can do or if your not sure what your NS is then just run a traceroute.

I supose you could optimize 1 for G and one one Y and not care about G removing the one it dosent like. As long as G dosent penalize both.

If your hosting is physically in the UK, I would pick your favourite & 301 "Permanently Moved" redirect the others to that one.

If you are hosting outside the UK, probably best to keep the .uk one, & 301 the others to it.

All SE's should (I say should) treat the chosen site as if it were the 301 redirected one, no penalties.

may i take it further? what about the networks if you have three different sites what is the best method to use? use one as the main and redirect from others using the link assigned to the main site? asking because this can major issues in terms of administration and moreover when i read the networks terms and conditions or merchants terms and conditions most of the time it states that the traffic should come from the assigned/registered site

  Some time later...

Hi,

This is exactly what I want to do. So I'm wondering if the answers
above still hold now it's April 2006 and Google's algo has changed
a bit.

I think one of my sites might have been penalised because
I created a .com (hosted in US) and a .co.uk (hosted in UK).

The .co.uk is not a duplicate of .com more like a series of
landing pages to .com

I'm now thinking I should just redirect .co.uk to .com
Is this wise?

Many thanks,
Steve
