  DMOZ - Still worth it?

Is it still worth trying to list sites on DMOZ?
I occasionally drop in and list a new site - but is it still as important as it used to be?

It's hard to find categories that have editors, you won't get listed for months if not years, and they don't accept affiliate sites anyway. Personally, I don't bother with them any more.

I'd have to echo Accelerators comments.

I'd imagine that many of the old sites which have been included in DMOZ for years, are now dead or are described/indexed incorrectly.

Ironically enough, the more open community based projects like wikipedia and delicious, are really flying at the minute, whereas DMOZ has become pretty much irrelavent to the websurfer.

Having said that, a DMOZ listing is still great for PR and many sites still rank well because of their DMOZ listing.

DMOZ has become a joke, im amazed that there really are no editors around that i know of, and when you apply to be an editor yourself they dont even have editors to reply to that half the time, you have to display some knowledge of the area that your in but they dont really like you having a site in that area in the directory, oh well asta la vista DMOZ

I was a DMOZ editor for a while but gave it up - I couldn't stand all the really petty rules about how to format a description for a site - i.e. can't include the words website or site - you can't say things like 'and many more' - etc etc

I've never met such a group of self opinionated, self righteous, anally retentive has-beens in all my life.

My ODP listed sites always score better than my non-ODP listed sites at the moment - I think this gives some credence to the Googe "TrustRank" concept, where the ODP is one of 200 or so highly trusted sources when it comes to link authority.

Of course, the ODP doesn't allow affiliate sites, so what tends to happen is I get lots of traffic for content sites (which don't earn much money) whereas I'd sooner have traffic for sales sites (that convert much, much better).

noticed an increase in Google traffic to one site a few months ago - and just discovered it in Dmoz - I submitted it months ago - so I'm assuming that's the reason.

Totally agree with you Keith on the rules surrounding the rules and regs - I lost the desire to be an Editor pretty quickly - it's an impossible task - don't know why Google bother with it.

I've been a DMOZ editor before, for a fairly small category, but I did it because I wanted to get one of my (non affiliate) sites listed and it was the quickest way to get the site listed. Being in DMOZ does seem to help with pagerank, it gets you links from a lot of sites that use DMOZ as the basis for their own directory.

One of the problems of being an editor is that they throw you out as an editor if you don't log in for a while, it happened to me a couple of years ago but they let me back in. It happened again a couple of months ago and I don't think I'll bother re-applying. It seems they'd rather have no editor for a category than one who only logs in now and again.

Actually, locality editing (your home town) at the ODP can be quite fun, and they tend to be the most up-to-date categories. If you spot a business or organisation in your area that's not listed, then you can list it and do something really useful for someone

Google don't have any special relation with dmoz. the reason a dmoz listing is a good idea is that thousands of web directories are powered from dmoz. if you get a listing in there you instantly get thousands of 1-way inbound links.

The Google directory ( http://www.google.co.uk/dirhp?hl=en ) is just a copy of Dmoz. You might not call that a 'special relationship' but I'm sure it must be the most widely used version of Dmoz.

yes, i'm aware of that. what i mean is that dmoz is treated no differently to any other directory. if you could make a perfect replica of dmoz in size and content, google would treat a link in there as the same i
