  Using Meta Tags?

I have recently read on the net a little article about using meta tags for SEO.
It basically said that the "keyword" bit of the meta tag is not really needed since most search engines don't really bother to concentrate to much on it since it has been spammed so much.

Does anyone agree with that or is it just rubbish?

  Re: Using Meta Tags?

I have found that if you use your longtail keyword string in the title of your page and don't include it anywhere on the page and only in the meta desc tag, google will display the meta desc tag of your page.

The advantage of this is that your meta desc tag can contain a good 'call to action' or 'call to click' message in the serps, rather than a truncated piece of text off the page.

I never leave a page without meta description.

Both, While google may not put alot of weight on it because of spam it should still be considered aswell as the title and description, everything links.

Yahoo, msn, ask ect.. are still good search engines and you should use keywords all the time that are relevant and relating to the content.

I always include the meta tags anyway, they are so easy to add theres no gain in missing them off, and some search engines still use them.

Sitting down and working on the meta keywords tag also gives you a chance to sit down and focus on what keywords you are targetting, which is obviously a worthwhile excercise.

Google flat out ignore the "keyword" meta, others don't. If you find that populating it gives you a bit of focus on creating the page do it, otherwise it's a waste of bits really
