What are the best Social Media site?
I am looking for some advice as to what the best social media sites are to put my articles on, when I Google it there are loads and a lot of the top ones seem to be American. Is it best to stick to ones more UK orientated or does it not really matter?
I put my articles on DIgg and Del.icio.us but from some of the SEO stuff I have read they talk about submitting to loads, maybe 20 or so sites.
Any advice would be appreciated.

I think you simply need to look at your post..
you will see, digg, del.icio.us, technorati, furl, stumbleUpon... I'd go with them 5..
a facebook group and twitter...
concentrate on them and see how it goes..

For social bookmarking, go with Digg, Delicious, Stumbleupon, Shoutwire, or propeller...
For social networking, go with Facebook and Twitter

Stumbleupon is great but a lot of US traffic likely if you're not careful... unless you've got US products which you want to be selling.
Is there a comprehensive guide explaining the ways of using this sort of social media for website promotion?

I wouldn't bother looking beyond Digg, Stumbleupon and Twitter, anything that does well on those sites tends to propegate to the others anyway.

There are no best social media sites. It all depends on you, your target market, and what you are selling. You have to get to know each of the networks and what their niche is. Technically, for generating direct traffic through messaging, it's nicer to hit the smaller social media sites. For instance, if you're an affiliate for rave accessories, you're going to want to use plurlife.com instead of using digg, cause everyone on plurlife is interested, and nobody on digg is.
I personally find that twitter is okay, for getting traffic, but the traffic must be to a blog with lots of relevant information and a simple interface.
From my own personal website, and my own user's use patterns of webDOM, I've found this to be the top ten list of most used networks in my software. My users consist of affiliate marketers and bands:
1 adultspace
2 facebook
3 myspace
4 purevolume
5 lastfm
6 youtube
7 buzznet
8 plurlife
9 tagged
10 imeem
These results are taken from this month only, but each type of site contains certain things, and certain psychology of users that certain types of affiliates or bands would want to either get involved with or just flat out market to.
