Anyone Built Their Own Facebook App?

I'm keen to explore the idea of building a Facebook App but have no idea how difficult this is.

All I'd want is system where people can submit photos and then other users can rate them.

Anyone like to venture a guess at whether this is achievable or not?

It's definitely achievable. Are you doing this for fun or profit? If the latter than you should think about monetization options before building.

Ideally I'd promote it under The 'It' Guide's brand so it will help increase brand awareness. I'd like to monetize it further, but I was concerned that would make it more complicated.

It is definitely achievable. We have recently designed our Facebook application to earn cashback straight from Facebook. Users can login and shop both from Facebook app or from the cashback website. Please view the app here.

Our site is a social gaming site. We offer something similar to what Zynga with Texas holdem Poker application offers on facebook.

We have our poker facebook application in private mode for now but it will be public when we do our official launch most likely happening in the next couple of days. We differ from Zynga and all other poker applications on facebook due to one big reason: we will pay our users real cash prizes for playing our freerolls.

I can tell you that making a Poker application as we have done is not easy, there has been a lot of money spent on a project like this (almost reaching the $1M) but it is definitely worth it since the estimate production on these applications is now up $500 million a year and will definitely increase to much higher figures as we develop our network along with our partners (licensees and affiliates). :tup

I've built an app before. With what facebook has as far as their API, you can do whatever you want really. It's quite an open platform, though sometimes their FBML standard can be painstakingly retarted.
