I feel that the difference between them is that Twitter is simply for people who want to just see what everyone is up to very quickly and cleanly, where as Facebook people have more to do on there so will be looking over the site for hours at a time.

In my eyes Facebook would be a much better place to advertise as there is a lot more content and more people being drawn to it every week for longer periods of time. A well placed ad on there will have an incredible exposure.

Agreed. Facebook still has a lot more users than Twitter, and with the amount of business that are also trying to get involved with Facebook dependant on the product, you could reach near enough every single person who has a computer.

I also think that the advertising side will eventually go to Facebook mobile and the Blackberry/iPhone apps for Facebook. With these the potential reach is limitless.

If Facebook continues on this current growth pretty, much everyone and every business will have a form of Facebook. Which (as an avid user myself) will bring connectivity in every aspect like never seen before.

Facebook certainly has more that can be done with it, but twitter is a very simple format to use. We have both a facebook fan page and a twitter account.
I would be interested to hear your thoughts on both.

    Cheers

If you're going to be doing your advertising through their interface and not through paying them lots of money to put a banner up for you, you should consider using one of the other slightly easier and possibly more niche sites to advertise on. There are tons of sites out there that are more efficient to advertise on than facebook and twitter.

Are you going to be sending PM's or just doing friend/follower requests?

Both have merits. We feed Kitbag.com content into both our Twitter and Facebook pages automatically.

Personally, they both annoy me! But, maybe I'm getting old and too cranky. Both are massively popular.

Facebook just signed it's 300 millionth registrant. That's 300,000,000 people. Scary.

Have run Facebook PPC ads / flyers (whatever it's called now) with mixed success. Interesting how you can target various demographics though. Perhaps it's the way forward !

For some reason this reminded me of the old Groucho Marx saying:

I'm going to have to vote for Twitter here because I'm getting about 500 visitors per month solely from Twitter. Plus, lots of people post their Twitter updates to Facebook as well, which sends you additional traffic from Facebook. I've found Twitter to be an excellent place to get extra exposure on your content.
